How to measure an Extension Spring or How to measure a Torsion Spring Extension
Springs
We will require the garage door weight and
height, if you are not sure which spring you need.
1.
The weight an extension spring can support is marked by the color code
at the end of the spring.
2.
Measure the garage door height. The standard height is usually 6 foot 6 inches
or 7 feet.

To Weigh Your Door:
1.
Raise door completely. Disconnect power and lifting arm of garage door opener.
2. Fasten "C" clamps or vice grips under bottom rollers to retain door.
With tension completely off extension springs, disconnect springs from track
support.
3.
Remove "C" clamps or vice grips and lower door by hand. Note that entire
weight of door, which could exceed several hundred pounds, has to be
lowered slowly by hand so more than one person is needed.
4.
Set bathroom scale to zero and place under center of door and record door
weight.
5. If door weight exceeds capacity
of the scale, use 2 bathroom scales. Add a 2 x 4 with one end on one scale
and the other on a second scale with the door perpendicular to the 2 x 4.
Add the respective weight from each scale together to get the total weight
of the garage door. **** Note: Shipping costs may vary according to the respected shipping weight,
destination, cost of items and insurance of the package. Manual adjustment of shipping cost may be necessary in these
situations.

Torsion
Springs
Measure the length of the unwound spring.
Do not measure the end caps of the springs. If your garage door has
left and right wound springs, measure both, as they may differ.
Next, Measure
the Inside Diameter (ID) of the spring. (See examples below)
We currently carry only the 2" diameter Torsion Springs in stock.
Next,
Determine the Wire Size.
Measure the length of 10 coils of the spring.
Example: 10 coils measures 2 1/4" = .225 wire size. (See chart below
for examples)
